The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning its Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide Strait that connects San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It connects San Francisco Bay to Marin County. U.S. city of San Francisco the northernmost tip and northernmost tip of the San Francisco Peninsula--to Marin County it is the main conduit for U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1 across the strait. It also transports pedestrian and bicycle traffic and is designated as part of U.S. Bicycle Route 95. Being declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers This bridge is one of the most recognizable emblems for San Francisco and California. It was first developed by engineer Joseph Strauss in 1917. The Frommer's travel guide states that The Golden Gate Bridge as "possibly one of the most beautiful, and the most photographed bridge in the world." When it was first opening in 1937, it was both most long and the highest suspension bridge of its kind in the entire world having a total stretch of over 4,200 feet in height and the total length of 746 feet.
